Elblang Canal May 1998
This is a canal with a difference - its also a Railway!
Faced with a problem of a conventional canal system with lock gates using too much water and emptying the freshwater lakes, Polish engineers came up with an ingenious solution - turn the canal into a railway - well almost lol
Where the canal level needs to raise or lower the boats are sailed into rail mounted cradles that are cabled up to a waterwheel system and are lowered or raised with only a fraction of the water than conventional canal locks - simples!!
Apologies for the quality of some of these images, they were taken on very early fixed lens 300k pixel point and shoot ! The rest are 35mm Slide Scans
